Fine Art & Craft in Leicester

Johnny draws on landscapes and organic shapes. His work expresses line, texture, and balance. Every item feels rooted in place and purpose.

Born in Leicester in 1970, I originally trained for four years at G Perry and Sons (Leicester) as an Engineers Patternmaker working in wood and metal.

This led to a degree in Furniture Restoration and Craftsmanship in High Wycombe. My first visit to Cornwall in 1994 opened my eyes up to creativity, especially the sea and the landscape. I also visited the Barbara Hepworth Museum and the Tate in St Ives.

Returning to Leicester to live in 1998 I had a need to express myself and turned to Painting. I started to get a feel for paint and the use of colour. My work was very much influenced by 20th century painters, such as Picasso and Howard Hodgkin as well as my life experiences and Cornwall.

Today I am a serious painter working in oil and acrylic. My paintings are abstract and expressive. I attempt to portray emotion, feeling and energy on to the canvas/paper, using layers of transparent and opaque paint. The paintings are built up gradually : for me depth, movement and colour are very important.
